<i>In situ</i> high temperature powder x-ray diffraction technique using a sapphire single-crystal flat cell

Understanding the behaviors of materials in their operating and manufacturing environments is essential not only scientific field, but also context designing industrial for target applications. In this study, we developed a high-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD) system, using small microscope heating stage at BL02B2 beamline SPring-8. Newly designed sample cells composed sapphire single crystals were employed to perform XRD experiments powdered samples high temperatures under oxidization/reduction gas atmospheres, with short exchange time. More specifically, conducted vacuum, air, inert (maximum temperature: ∼1400 °C), reduction flow conditions ∼900 °C). addition, monitor changes exhausted composition during chemical reactions, system was combined situ gas-analysis tools (a remote gas-pressure control chromatograph, mass spectrometer), which allowed analysis gas-adsorption/desorption solid–gas reaction processes. Several experiments, such as observation Fe oxides, phase transitions ZrO2 BaCO3, synthesis BaZrO3, demonstrated validity usefulness system.
